These days we read in so many of the social networks the slogan “just be you”. I am someone that clearly endorses this truth and encourages others to have a go at living from this space as I do myself. Over the years even though I have respected tradition I have nevertheless developed a passion for the truth. One of these truths is the truth of discovering who I really am so that I can live from this reality and not from a pretend one that is largely based on how others are and think.
As I have undertaken this journey I have however discovered that so many of us, including myself, have the wrong understanding of this. You see many of us think that this “you” is something we work towards and as it reaches perfection we will then be able to embrace it and be it. This approach of course begs the question that if this is the truth then which “you” will you be living from until then?
Will this you be a pretend one? Maybe perhaps a temporary and recyclable one until the current one is fixed? Will you perhaps copy and paste a “you” from the internet or will you have one made in China?
The reality is that “you” is who you are now. The good the bad and the ugly. You is made up of that part of you that is dark and seedy. You is also made up of that dirty part that shows up when you are feeling weak and low. You also includes that good side of you that helps the old ladies cross the street and attempts to love others. Yep I understand if you might only like the third one but the reality is that all three of them make up the current you. Ignoring the first two will mean that you cant be you. Pretending that they are not there will mean never being able to discover the real you or worst yet be able to live from it.
You see what needs to happen here is for you and I to start embracing the three together at the same time. This will mean embracing you and embracing who God embraces right now. As you do this your awareness will grow and your understanding will deepen. The shame, guilt, and condemnation that prevents you from being you will begin to dissolve. A journey will then be born where you will give yourself permission to discover the real you with no end result in mind, and at the same time give God permission to show you how he loves you as you are and not as you ought to be.
As we choose to approach life in this way we will eventually and suddenly begin to see things as they really are including ourselves and it is this truth that will then begin to set you and I free from items one and two as well as any other self built illusions we may carry and think we need to survive. The important thing is for us to be aware that this might take years and maybe even never disappear on this side of glory. Thats right you heard me right. Some things will not be as they were meant to be on this side of glory and thats ok as the Apostle Paul found out when he asked Dad to remove the thorn from his sideā¦.Dad’s grace was sufficient for him then and it will be sufficient for you too.
Please enjoy who “you” are and leave the transformation, if any is needed, to the only one who can make it happen as you focus on how He loves you and not on trying to give Him a hand as all it will do is get on the way and prolong you from awakening to whom “YOU” really is!
